Today, 4-wheel drive systems are no longer strange to many customers. Most drivers will often prioritize choosing a 4-wheel drive system for their “pet” to achieve a more powerful and dynamic driving experience, especially for off-road SUVs.

However, Toyota surprised everyone by announcing an AWD version for the “national sedan” Camry with a 4-wheel drive system. To be honest, although the Toyota Camry is not a car that really needs 4-wheel drive, it does give the car excellent acceleration and significantly reduces wheel slippage on the road. Compared to the standard FWD version using front-wheel drive, the 2020 Toyota Camry AWD has a price difference of only 1,500 USD (~ 35.5 million VND).

Of course, equipping the Toyota Camry 2020 with a 4-wheel drive system does not have too much of an impact on customers. There has always been a separate market for sedans using 4-wheel drive, such as the Subaru Legacy, Ford Fusion or the latest Nissan Altima. With this new AWD version, Toyota hopes to increase sales of Camry cars by 15%.

Toyota calls the 4-wheel drive system on the Camry Dynamic Torque Control AWD. This system was also previously equipped by Toyota for Avalon AWD and the gasoline-powered RAV4 crossover. This is a familiar system with the transmission on the front axle, the driveshaft running to the rear axle, and the coupling located just in front of the rear differential.

When the Camry’s computers detect wheel slippage in the front, the coupling will hook onto the drive shaft, transmitting 50% of the engine’s torque to the rear axle. Toyota says this Dynamic Torque Control system provides flexible and powerful performance without affecting the vehicle’s fuel economy. Toyota Camry AWD 2020 with Dynamic Torque Control AWD system has the ability to handle very flexibly and accurately, especially on snowy roads.

It is difficult to evaluate the actual value of 2020 Toyota Camry AWD cars on dry highways. When entering “tight” turns, the Camry usually does not experience understeer, because the engine will transmit all the power to the rear wheels when necessary. However, it must be admitted that the 4-wheel drive system only really demonstrates its superior role on snowy roads.

The 4-wheel drive system will only be integrated by Toyota with the standard 2.5L, 4-cylinder engine, producing a maximum capacity of 205 horsepower on the Camry XSE version and maximum torque of 251 Nm. Meanwhile, the Toyota Camry LE, SE and XLE versions have a maximum capacity of 202 horsepower. In addition, the V6 engine version will still use front-wheel drive.

All power from the engine is transmitted to the wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. The appearance of the 4-wheel drive system will make the weight of the Toyota Camry AWD 2020 about 75 kg heavier than the standard version. Using a mid-range sedan with 4-wheel drive does not seem to be a priority when drivers can equip specialized snow tires on a front-wheel drive sedan. Similar to a 4-wheel drive system, a sedan with specialized snow tires provides impressive acceleration and strong traction on snowy roads.

Returning to the Toyota Camry AWD 2020, customers will have to spend an amount of 725 USD – 1300 USD (equivalent to about 17 – 30 million VND) to own a set of snow tires. Meanwhile, for only 1,500 USD (~ 35.5 million VND), the 2020 Camry AWD will be equipped with the Dynamic Torque Control AWD 4-wheel drive system from Toyota, which not only provides strong performance but also enhances the flexible handling ability of this sedan.
