In the past few years, the auto market has witnessed an explosion of crossover models with aggressive looks to approach the image of off-road vehicles.

Most of it just stops at the styling level, with plastic cladding, knobby tires and a slight increase in ground clearance, but off-road performance isn’t much different.

However, the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness is a completely different story. While the standard Outback does its job well, the Wilderness variant makes a statement about its serious off-road capabilities. With a ground clearance of up to 9.5 inches and a fine-tuned suspension, this is no longer a stylish family car but has become a machine ready to conquer the harshest roads.

Distinctive design, oriented towards function

Compared to the regular Outback, the Wilderness version has many noticeable changes. The front bumper has been completely redesigned, eliminating traditional patterns to make room for the large “SUBARU” lettering across the grille, reminiscent of pure off-road vehicles. The copper-colored fog lights stand out on the black plastic panel that takes up most of the front of the car, creating a sturdy and practical feeling.

Along the body of the car are side panels printed with the Outback logo, which both play a protective role and emphasize the “Wilderness” positioning. Behind, the copper-rimmed light cluster continues to appear on the trunk lid. A small but very “Subaru” detail is the black plastic strip surrounding the rear logo, designed so that users can lean on their skis or snowboard without worrying about scratching the paint. The car has an additional Deep Emerald Metallic blue color option for 395 USD (10.2 million VND) combined with 17-inch black painted wheels and 225 mm wide tires, creating a harmonious and unique overall look.

The interior compartment is clearly upgraded

Inside, the 2026 Outback Wilderness feels more upscale than before. For the first time, the car is equipped with a full leather interior, electrically adjustable, heated and cooled front seats. The Wilderness logo appears densely on the headrest, floor mats and many small details, creating a unique identity for this version. The rear trunk space still maintains Subaru’s familiar practical style, and the company even has an interesting way to measure capacity: by the number of “dogs” it can carry.

Equipped with refreshed technology with a 12.1-inch central screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, wireless charging and USB-C port. This is a new entertainment system for the entire Outback line, replacing the “tablet” interface that once caused much controversy. Although the graphics are simple, the new system is easier to operate and more user-friendly in actual use.

The return of physical buttons

Another valuable change is that Subaru brought back physical buttons. The air conditioning system, camera and many important functions all have their own buttons, instead of relying entirely on the touch screen. Behind the steering wheel is a 12.3-inch digital clock cluster with high customization capabilities, especially the Wilderness version has a unique background interface.

The rear seats have spacious legroom, and the ceiling is about 2.5 cm higher than the regular version, making the space more airy.

Overall, the cabin of the Outback Wilderness is better finished, aiming to serve as both a true off-road vehicle and the most advanced version of the Outback line. However, with a price approaching 52,000 USD (1.35 billion VND) when choosing all options, some plastic materials still feel inadequate.

Genuine Subaru engine
Outback Wilderness 2026 has a 2.4L turbocharged boxer engine, 260 horsepower and 277 Nm of torque. This is considered a much more suitable choice than the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine on the standard version, which is considered slow. The turbocharged engine gives good feedback, enough power in the low rpm range, suitable for both driving on the street and climbing hills.

Although the ground clearance reaches 9.5 inches, nearly 1 inch higher than the regular version, the car does not feel floating or stalling when driving fast. The average fuel consumption is about 10.23 liters/km in mixed operating conditions.

Off-road and X-Mode capabilities

One weakness of the standard Outback is that the suspension is quite stiff off-road. On the Wilderness version, electronic shock absorbers and large tread tires help with better absorption, bringing Subaru’s familiar “rally-like” driving feel.

The X-Mode system continues to be a great assistant when off-road, automatically managing torque and traction on sand, mud or dirt terrain.

Consider realistically between passion and use value

Outback Wilderness 2026 has a starting price of 46,445 USD (1.20 billion VND), if you choose all options, the number can reach 50,930 USD (1.32 billion VND). This is not a small amount of money for an Outback, especially when many similar equipment can be found on the Limited XT version with a lower price and better fuel consumption.

In fact, unless customers really have high-intensity off-road needs, the Limited XT version will be a more economical and practical choice. However, for customers who prioritize individuality and need a car that is both elegant when walking around and strong enough to comfortably carry goods on long camping trips, the “redundancy” of the Wilderness version creates an irresistible charm.
