What is Lockdown Mode in ChatGPT?

Lockdown Mode is essentially a high-security setting that limits what ChatGPT can do. When enabled, the system will operate more cautiously to reduce the risk of exploitation, manipulation or unintended data leakage. OpenAI describes this as narrowing the product’s attack surface, even if that means limiting useful features.

The biggest change when using Lockdown Mode in ChatGP is the effect on web access. Browsing is restricted to cached content only, which prevents ChatGPT from pulling information directly from the internet. That reduces the risk of transmitting sensitive data, but it also means search results may be incomplete or out of date.

Image processing has also been tightened. ChatGPT can no longer include images in responses, although users can still upload their own images and continue to use image creation tools.

The Deep Research function, which allows for more complex multi-step analysis, is completely disabled, as is Agent Mode, which if available would allow the system to deploy more automated tasks.

Other restrictions focus on networks and files. The code generated by Canvas is not allowed to access the network, and ChatGPT cannot download files for data analysis. It can still work with user-uploaded files, but it won’t automatically download any files.

In general, these limitations when using ChatGPT’s Lockdown Mode are intended to minimize the possibility of the system interfering with the outside world or operating independently.

Who can use Lockdown Mode on ChatGPT?

Currently, Lock Mode is only available for users of ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, ChatGPT for Healthcare and ChatGPT for Teachers packages. OpenAI says it plans to make this mode available for ChatGPT plans for individual users and groups in the coming months.

According to OpenAI, Lockdown Mode does not completely eliminate the risk of attacks that insert malicious code into dialog boxes, but only significantly reduces this risk.

Additionally, new “Elevated Risk” labels have been added to features that OpenAI considers to pose a security risk. When sufficient security risk mitigation measures are in place, these labels will be removed.
