How to install and remove apps on Ubuntu

By default, many useful programs are pre-installed when you set up Ubuntu on your computer. However, you may need specific software for purposes that the default applications do not serve. This article will guide you through installing or uninstalling applications and other software on Ubuntu or from third-party sources.

How to install and remove software on Ubuntu

Install the application

An application is software with a graphical user interface (GUI). The Ubuntu Desktop development team has chosen a set of default applications that they think will cover most daily tasks. However, you can install additional applications to expand your ability to use Ubuntu. To install apps, you can use App Center.

The applications are available in two formats: Snap packages (“snap”) and the Debian package (“deb“). Some apps are available in both formats. In that case, the Snap package will be listed first in App Center.

Note: You can also use App Center to install software without a GUI.

How to install an application on Ubuntu:

• Step 1: Click the icon App Center on the Dock or search “Software” in the search bar Activities.
• Step 2: When App Center launches, search for an app or select a category and find the app from the list.
• Step 3: Select the application you want to install and press Install.
• Step 4: App Center will ask you to enter your password. Once authenticated, the installation process will begin.

The installation process usually completes quickly, but it may take longer if your Internet connection is slow.

Uninstall the application

You can use App Center to uninstall apps.

How to remove applications on Ubuntu:

• Step 4: Select the application and click Uninstall.

Note: Some apps depend on other apps to function properly. If you try to remove an application that is needed by another application, both applications may be uninstalled. App Center will ask you to confirm before proceeding.

Language settings

When installing Ubuntu, the language you choose in the installer will be installed along with English. You can add other languages.

Note: Some translations may not be complete, and some apps may not support your language.

• Step 1: Open the application Language Support. You can find this application in the Activities search interface. Additionally, it is accessible from Settings > System > Region & Language > Manage Installed Languages.
• Step 2: Click Install / Remove Languages….
• Step 3: Select the languages ​​you want to install and uncheck the existing languages ​​you want to remove.
