Entering the third generation, Mazda’s crossover model not only overcomes space weaknesses but also upgrades the control system in the cabin.

Larger dimensions and chassis refinement

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 has an overall length and wheelbase that is 4.5 inches larger than its predecessor. This change contributes to improving stability when the vehicle moves at high speed.

Mazda also adjusted the electric power steering system to increase feedback from the road surface. Steering effort is lighter than before but still maintains a stable sense of control.

Although the suspension structure remains essentially the same as the old model, Mazda has updated the dampers and used springs with lower stiffness. This change helps the vehicle operate more smoothly in mixed road conditions while still maintaining the typical stability characteristics of this vehicle.

In contrast to the chassis changes, the 2026 Mazda CX-5 continues to have a traditional 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. This engine block retains the parameters of 187 horsepower and 185 Nm of torque.

In actual operation, although the vehicle has quite sensitive accelerator response at low speed ranges, this engine shows a lack of power when traveling on steep mountain passes or when the vehicle is carrying a heavy load. This is a significant limitation for a new chassis that is considered to have better handling potential. According to the plan, the Hybrid version expected to launch in 2027 can solve this performance problem.

The cockpit has many improvements

One of the notable changes of the new CX-5 is improved soundproofing in the cabin. Mazda added sound-absorbing materials to the luggage compartment floor, tailgate and reinforced the structure around the C-pillar as well as the rear wheel cavity area.

In addition, the speaker position on the front door is moved to the cowl area, helping to reduce gaps in the door and contribute to limiting noise from the outside.

The CX-5 2026 interior compartment is equipped with a new infotainment system. Mazda has removed the familiar center control knob and replaced it with a large touch screen integrated with Google Built-In.

Some physical buttons are still arranged on the steering wheel, including the M-Drive mode activation button and the 360-degree camera quick access button. However, the traditional volume and climate control buttons no longer appear on the center console.

Functions such as adjusting temperature, volume or some vehicle features can be performed through Google’s voice assistant. In addition, control buttons are also integrated on the steering wheel to reduce direct operations on the screen.

The center screen comes in two sizes depending on the version and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with wired connectivity on the standard version and wireless on higher versions.

Rear seat space is improved

Mazda said that the rear seat space on the new CX-5 has been improved compared to the previous generation. Larger legroom helps rear passengers have more usable space. The rear door step is also designed to be larger to support getting in and out of the car, especially for young children.

In the front area, the seats are still designed in the familiar Mazda style, prioritizing comfort for long journeys. However, some details in the cabin use simpler materials, such as the center console area and part of the door panels.

Overall, the 2026 Mazda CX-5 is a pragmatic update, focusing on space and technology, although there are still points of confusion about engine performance and the ergonomics of the new control system.
