Choose which one is worth “your wallet”?
The MacBook Pro M5 is powerful with a mini-LED screen and good heat dissipation, while the MacBook Air M4 is light, has a strong battery and is more affordable. So which line should you choose?
If you are considering upgrading to a new MacBook, you will probably be quite confused: Should you choose the MacBook Air M4 or spend more to upgrade to the MacBook Pro M5? Both are Apple’s most popular models currently, but the feeling when using them is quite clearly different. I have had time to experience both devices in my daily work and below will be the most detailed feelings about these two devices.

Performance: M5 is really strong, but M4 is not “weak”
The biggest difference between the two models is the chip. The M5 is newer, more powerful, especially in GPU and the ability to handle AI-related tasks. With heavy tasks like rendering 4K videos, running Lightroom or internal AI processing, I clearly feel the MacBook Pro M5 “loads” more. The machine keeps the high pulse stable, does not choke when running long tasks.
Meanwhile, the MacBook Air M4 may not be too outstanding, but the performance is smoother than I thought. Office tasks, basic photo editing, running learning apps, watching movies, and multitasking are all fast and stable. The interesting thing is: M4 is not considered “outdated”. It is still very strong to use for the next 3–5 years.
If you do not do tasks that require continuous performance, the difference between M4 and M5 is sometimes only in benchmarks and may not be clearly felt in reality.
Heat dissipation system
There is one point that I realized immediately after a few days of using it in parallel: the cooling fan. MacBook Air M4 does not have a fan and that is both an advantage and a limitation. The device runs super quiet, even when I run many Chrome tabs or edit photos. But when running heavy tasks for more than 5–10 minutes, the MacBook Air M4 started to heat up and performance decreased slightly to avoid overheating – not significant, but I felt it.
In contrast, the MacBook Pro M5 has an active cooling system. Used for a long time without slowing down, even when editing videos or opening many AI applications. The device is noticeably cooler, especially when placed on the lap. If you are a content creator, graphic artist, or video editor, the Pro series is a much safer choice.
Screen: bigger difference than I thought
This is the part that made me change my perspective. Previously, I thought the MacBook Air’s screen was too good – beautiful, bright, sharp… but when I switched to using the MacBook Pro M5 for a few days, I saw the difference is real.
MacBook Pro M5 uses a mini LED screen, supports HDR and doubles the brightness. When watching HDR videos, the images are extremely vivid, with bright highlights but still retaining details. If you do color grading, editing, or simply enjoy watching high-quality Netflix, this is a worthwhile upgrade.
If you only do office work, watch SDR content, write, study… the MacBook Air M4 screen is really beautiful enough for long-term use.
About the connection port
What I like most about the MacBook Pro M5 is the completeness: MagSafe 3, three Thunderbolt ports, HDMI, SD slot. For me, who often plugs in secondary monitors and camera memory cards, not needing a conversion port every day is truly “happy”.
In contrast, the MacBook Air M4 only has two Thunderbolt ports located on the same side. That’s not annoying if you only plug in the charger and occasionally attach USB-C, but when you need to output the screen while charging and plugging in the SSD… you will feel “something is missing”.
Size and feel of use
The MacBook Air M4 is pleasantly light. Carrying in a backpack almost doesn’t feel the weight, especially when moving a lot during the day. I personally like the “open and use immediately” feeling of the Air.
MacBook Pro M5 is thicker and heavier, but feels truly luxurious and “pro”. When placed on the table, the device looks more sturdy and premium. Depends on your needs: if you like light then go for Air, if you like sturdy then go for Pro.
Battery life in actual use
When using a light mixture of Chrome + Word + Spotify + Photoshop, the MacBook Air M4 usually gives me about 9-11 hours, and the MacBook Pro M5 about 8-9 hours. Pro is more powerful so it’s understandable that it consumes more power. For office needs or frequent travel, Air has the advantage.
The difference in selling price is not small
The difference between the two machines when configured is equivalent to about 8–10 million and this is the most important question.
If you prioritize a beautiful screen, full ports, strong performance, and good heat dissipation, the MacBook Pro M5 is worth the money.
If you want a Mac that is light, has a good battery, is powerful enough and is affordable, the MacBook Air M4 is a much more reasonable and economical choice.
And to be honest, for most common users, the MacBook Air M4 has exceeded expectations.
MacBook Pro M5 vs MacBook Air M4: Which one is worth the money?
If your work leans towards graphics, video editing, AI rendering or simply needs a more durable machine in the long term, I recommend choosing the MacBook Pro M5. MiniLED screen and active heat dissipation are two factors that take the experience to a new level.
But if you do office work, study, online business, light design, fast video editing… and want to optimize costs, the MacBook Air M4 is really reasonable and worth buying. The device is thin, light, cool, with good battery life – overall, it feels comfortable when used for a long time.
Really, don’t buy a MacBook Pro M5 just because it has an M5 chip. Because MacBook Air M4 is still an “economical” and flexible choice for the majority of users. Therefore, consider what your real needs are to make the best choice.
