What is ZIP?

A file with the ZIP file extension is a ZIP archive and is the most widely used archive format. Like other archive file formats, it is simply a collection of one or more files and/or folders, but compressed into a single file for easier use.

This file format is also commonly used to reduce file size for easier storage or transfer. People can decompress the ZIP file to access the entire original content before compression.

Uses of ZIP files

The most common use of ZIP files is to download software. Compressing software programs saves storage space on servers, reduces download times to computers, and keeps hundreds or thousands of files neatly organized in a single file.

Another benefit of ZIP files can be seen when downloading or sharing dozens of photos. Instead of sending each image individually via email or saving each image from a website, senders can put every image into a ZIP file to only need to transfer one file.

Basic operations with ZIP

Open and extract the ZIP

The easiest way to open a ZIP file is to double-click it and let your computer display the folders and files inside. In most operating systems, including Windows and macOS, ZIP files are processed internally without the need for any additional software.

Although it is the easiest way to open ZIP files, these archives sometimes contain executable files that cannot be run properly unless they are decompressed first. Or, if there’s a file inside the ZIP file that you want to save in another format, you’ll need to extract it from the archive first.

To do this in Windows, do this Open the ZIP file and choose Extract all or Extract (depending on different Windows versions) at the top of File Explorer. That folder is now a copy of the ZIP file’s contents, but the user can access all the files more easily for use (like running a program or converting files).

Create ZIP file

To create a ZIP file in Windows, right-click the files and/or folders needed in the archive, then select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder. In Windows 11, users will need to choose Show more options to see that menu.

To compress files/folders in macOS, do right click Go to them and choose Compress Items from the menu to create the file Archive.zip.

Convert ZIP files

Files can only be converted to a similar format. For example, it’s not possible to convert JPG images to MP3 audio clips, or convert ZIP files to PDF or MP4.

ZIP files are just containers containing compressed versions of the actual file. So, if there are files inside the ZIP file that want to be converted, like PDF to DOCX or MP3 to AC3, the user must first extract the files using one of the above methods, then convert those extracted files using a file converter.

If you want to convert ZIP to another compressed file format like 7Z or TAR.GZ, users just need to find a converter that supports those formats.

Recommended conversion tools

Since ZIP is an archive format, you can easily convert it to RAR, 7Z, ISO, TGZ, TAR or any other compressed format in two ways, depending on the file size:

• If the file is small in size, you should use ConvertFiles or Online-Convert.com. These tools work similarly to ZIP decompression sites; meaning you need to upload the file to the website before the conversion takes place.
• For large ZIP files (which will take a long time to upload to the website), use Zip2ISO to convert to ISO format, or IZarc to convert to a variety of archive formats.
