KTM is quietly creating a motorcycle that can automatically brake to avoid collisions
This technology is thanks to the second generation of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) developed by Bosch, making driving safer and easier. It is expected that these features will appear on an upcoming KTM Super Adventure model, likely built on the 1390 platform and equipped with a semi-automatic clutch transmission.
Bosch’s new radar-enabled safety features will debut on the 2025 KTM model.
Six outstanding safety features
Among the new features, the most prominent is adaptive cruise control – stop and go. This feature helps the driver maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front when traveling at slower speeds. When necessary, the system will automatically slow down the motorbike and can even stop completely if it encounters a dangerous situation. This function is designed specifically for vehicle models without a clutch, helping the driver continue moving after stopping without worrying about stalling the engine or having to change gears.
The next generation adaptive cruise control system can gradually slow your vehicle or even bring you to a complete stop safely.
Another important safety feature is emergency brake assist. When the system detects danger ahead and realizes the driver has begun to brake, it automatically increases brake pressure on the front wheels to reduce speed as quickly as possible, helping to avoid a collision.
Emergency brake assist will increase front wheel brake pressure to reduce vehicle speed.
To protect the driver from vehicles behind, the system has two warning features: rear distance warning and rear collision warning. When a vehicle moves too close from behind, a warning will appear on the motorbike screen to let the driver know. At the same time, the system will also automatically turn on hazard warning lights to signal vehicles behind about a safe distance.
Rear distance warning will warn you when a vehicle is behind you and is within a potentially dangerous collision range.
If you are the person traveling behind other vehicles, the distance assist feature will come into play. This feature works similarly to adaptive cruise control but is optimized to slow down and brake slightly when you get too close to the vehicle in front. However, the driver can still control by turning the throttle quickly to pass another vehicle if necessary.
Rear collision warning will turn on your hazard lights to let the driver behind you know they are getting too close.
Finally, for those who love to ride in groups, the group ride assist feature will help you maintain a stable position in a staggered formation with your convoy, without having to rely too much on the person in front to move in the middle of the lane.
Driving Distance Assist will prevent you from driving too close to the vehicle in front.
The future of safety technology on motorbikes
KTM has applied radar technology on its high-end vehicles in recent years. Other brands such as Ducati have also started using similar systems. However, Bosch’s development of this new generation of ADAS marks an important step forward in enhancing safety for motorcyclists.
Bosch hopes that these advanced safety features will soon appear on many other brands and motorbike models, not just limited to high-end models. However, this will depend on the level of market acceptance of this technology. If demand for these safety systems increases, Bosch will continue to develop lower-cost versions of the sensors, helping to spread these features across more motorcycle segments in the future.
KTM’s launch of new models with advanced safety features not only enhances the driving experience but also creates a turning point in the development of safety technology for motorcycles. With significant improvements in the driver assistance system, users will have more peace of mind when participating in traffic, especially in dangerous situations.
