How to unlock and upgrade hobbies in the game Heartopia
From cooking to taking care of cats, here’s how to unlock all the hobbies in Heartopia.
Heartopia is a gentle life simulation game, where every difficult aspect of sosongs has been softened. If you find Animal Crossing a little too stressful or laborious, then Heartopia could very well be your next town life simulation game.

Despite the feeling of smooth, pressure-free gameplay, the game still has its own charm. Much of the game revolves around the player pursuing various interests. Some hobbies like fishing and gardening will open up quite soon, while other activities like taking care of cats require more time and investment.
This article will overview all the hobbies in Heartopia and show you how to unlock each hobby.
How to unlock preferences in Heartopia
Currently, Heartopia has seven different interests. Some of them will be unlocked as you complete a series of tutorial missions that are quite long, true to the style of the gentle town simulation game series.
No matter how approached, every new hobby in Heartopia requires a Hobby Expansion Ticket to unlock. This ticket is awarded for completing specific tasks, and due to its limited quantity, it is a fairly rare resource.
How to unlock Fishing in Heartopia
You will unlock the Fishing hobby in the early stages of the tutorial. During this time, Vanya (Fishing instructor) will visit your home, give you a fishing rod and teach you how to fish.
Players will be given a Hobby Expansion Pass to unlock Fishing. Because you are still in the tutorial, you cannot use this ticket for other purposes.
How to unlock Gardening in Heartopia
Similar to Fishing, the Gardening hobby is also unlocked during the tutorial, when Blanc (the Gardening hobby instructor) visits your home. Blanc will give you a watering can, planter, some tomato seed packets, along with the Hobby Expansion Ticket that you must use to unlock Gardening in order to continue the tutorial quest series.
How to unlock Insect Catching in Heartopia
As you reach the end of the linear tutorial, after reaching Developer Level 6, you will receive a Hobby Expansion Ticket and have the freedom to choose a new hobby.
In practice, this means that gamers will choose one of the three hobbies that are unlocked at level 6 and you will first be asked to meet the instructor of each hobby to learn more.
The first destination was Naniwa, who lived in the garden near the riverbank. Naniwa will explain the rules and benefits of Bug Catching (sometimes called Bug Catching in some dialogue), and invite you to come back after talking to the other two instructors if you decide to make this your third and final hobby in the tutorial.
After speaking with all three guides, the player can return to Naniwa and give the Hobby Expansion Ticket to unlock Insect Catching. If you choose one of the other two preferences, you will have to wait until you earn the next ticket to have the opportunity to unlock Insect Catching, so choose carefully.
How to unlock Birdwatching in Heartopia
The second destination in the hobby quest in Developer Level 6 is Bailey J, who is upstairs in the pet shop. Bailey J will explain the rules and benefits of Bird Watching, and invite you to come back after speaking with your next instructor if you decide to make this your last hobby in the tutorial.
After talking to all three instructors, you can return to Bailey J and give the Hobby Expansion Ticket to unlock Bird Watching. If you choose one of the other two preferences, you will need to wait until new tickets become available, so consider carefully.
How to unlock Cooking in Heartopia
The third and final destination in the hobby quest in Developer Level 6 is Massimo, standing in front of his cafe (a small house in the middle of town, outside with a blackboard with rainbow-colored letters). Massimo will explain the rules and benefits of Cooking, and invite you to come back after thinking it over if you decide to unlock this hobby.
Once you’ve spoken to all three instructors, you can return to Massimo at any time and present the Hobby Expansion Ticket to unlock Cooking. If you choose one of the other two interests, you will have to wait for the next ticket to learn Cooking, so choose wisely.
Note: There is no right or wrong choice when deciding to use the third ticket, but it is recommended that you choose Cooking, as this hobby combines very well with Gardening and Fishing, and allows you to cook stamina-regenerating dishes on the go.
How to unlock Cat Care in Heartopia
Heartopia introduces you to a cute kitten right from the start, but doesn’t immediately explain how you can raise one of your own.
Gamers can buy cats at the pet store managed by Ms. Joan. He even has a hobby of taking care of cats. However, you need to reach Developer Level 12 to buy a pet, and you also need to earn an additional Hobby Expansion Ticket, as the three tickets given in the tutorial are used up before you reach this milestone.
How to unlock Dog Care in Heartopia
If you’re not a cat lover, or prefer dogs to cats, you can also buy puppies from Joan’s pet store.
- Like cats, you need to reach Developer Level 12 to be able to raise a dog.
- Dog Grooming and Cat Grooming each require a separate Hobby Expansion Pass if you want to open both.
- You are required to unlock Cat Care and complete its tutorial before you can unlock additional Dog Care.
How to upgrade preferences in Heartopia
Gamers may notice that hobbies in Heartopia are very similar to skills in other life simulation games. The biggest difference is that in Heartopia, hobbies are the focus, not just a tool to prove your ability in a traditional career.
So unlocking a hobby is just the beginning. Every hobby has multiple levels of progression. When you reach a new level, you will open up many new possibilities, such as more complex and interesting recipes, higher success rates, and many other additional effects and rewards.
Hobbies in Heartopia can be upgraded using Hobby Upgrade Tickets. This pass is awarded similarly to the Hobby Expansion Pass, but is much more common, so you’ll rarely find yourself in a situation where you can’t upgrade.
However, unlike unlocking preferences, upgrading requires additional conditions. You need to accumulate enough points in that hobby to reach the upgrade threshold. This often requires you not only to repeat actions related to your interests, but also to expand your Collection (such as catching new fish, cooking new dishes, etc.) to receive higher score rewards.
