With these separation alerts turned on, Apple will continuously track your device’s location and use their approximate location to let you know when you forget to take it with you.

When people leave an Apple device behind, they will receive a notification on any other connected device that a device has been left behind, along with its approximate location.

Apple devices that support Notifications when left behind

Left Behind Notifications can be sent when a user leaves their iPhone or any other accessory in an unknown place. Here are all the devices that have this feature:

• iPhone running iOS 15 or later.
• iPad running iPadOS 15 or later.
• iMac, MacBook, Mac or Mac mini running macOS Monterey.
• Apple Watch runs watchOS 8 or later.

How to turn on Notifications when left behind for Apple devices

Users can enable the Notify When Left Behind alert for any Apple device that has the app installed Find. Because the iPhone is the heart of all Apple devices, this article will show you how to enable this feature on your phone. People can follow the same steps to turn it on on another device.

Step 1: Open the application Find on iPhone/iPad.

Step 2: Tap the tab Device at the bottom and select the device you want to receive notifications when left behind.

Step 3: Information about the selected device is displayed. Scroll down and select Notification when left behind in section Notification.

Step 4: A new overflow menu will appear providing key information about the new feature. Here, enable the option Notification when left behind to enable alerts whenever you forget to have this device with you.

Additionally, Apple allows users to make exceptions to these warnings when the user is at home or a familiar location like the office and can leave the device there.

Add a location as an exception to receive notifications when your device is left unattended

To set up exceptions, tap options New location in section Notify me, except.

On the next screen, add the desired location where people don’t want to receive notifications in the map.

Additionally, users can set a range so that Apple notifies them as soon as they are about to leave the selected range. Scope included Small, Medium and Bigselect one of them and tap Finished in the top right corner.

When this location is selected, it appears in the Notify when left behind preferences. This feature allows adding as many locations as you like.
