What is Respiration in Minecraft?
Respiration is an underwater spell in Minecraft. So what exactly is the use of Respiration Minecraft? Let’s find out together!
Among all the potential risks and dangers in Minecraft, it’s easy to forget one of the most common yet inevitable ways to die: drowning. Whether you’re lost in an underwater cave system, or trapped in a shipwreck, seemingly mundane exploration activities can quickly become life-threatening.
Unless, you can breathe underwater. That’s when the Respiration spell comes into play! This spell can increase oxygen levels by more than four times, giving you enough time to find your way to the surface safely. Here are the things you need to know to get the Respiration enchant in Minecraft.
How to get Respiration enchant in Minecraft
The most common way to get the Respiration spell in Minecraft is to use an enchantment table or find enchantment books in various buildings. Since this is one of Minecraft’s spells, here’s how to do it:
From the enchantment table
One of the easiest and beginner-friendly methods to get breathing spells is to use the enchantment table in Minecraft. You can craft it using obsidian, diamonds, and a book. Once completed, place the table on the ground, right click on it to open the user interface. Then, place the helmet you want to enchant in the left box.
Now, all you need to do is place a Lapis Lazuli in the right slot and check the enchantment options displayed on the right side. If you’re lucky, you can get a set containing breathing spells using the least amount of experience points.
From Enchanted Books and an Anvil
Another reliable method to get the respiration spell in Minecraft is to use the respiration spellbook on the anvil along with the helmet. The best ways to get spellbooks with breathing spells are fishing, looting from chests found inside dungeons, shipwrecks, or even trading with Librarian villagers.
Once you have obtained the spell books, you can place them in the middle slot after interacting with the anvil in Minecraft. Place the helmet in the leftmost slot to enchant it with a breathing spell.
How to use Respiration in Minecraft
Enchant Respiration helps you stay underwater longer in Minecraft. At first glance, Respiration magic seems simple. As the name suggests, it helps improve the ability to breathe underwater. And that’s exactly what it does to help you survive underwater by reducing the rate of oxygen depletion and damage caused by drowning.
An oxygen meter will appear when you enter the water. So the oxygen only lasts a total of 15 seconds, after which you start taking damage every tick. Here, if you have a helmet equipped with the Respiration spell, it will add 15 seconds to your oxygen usage time per level.
Furthermore, even if oxygen runs out, the Respiration spell still gives you a chance to not take damage per tick. The chance of taking no damage is based on a simple formula: Level/(Level+1), where level is the level of the Respiration spell.
| Respiration level | Total breathing time in seconds | Chance to avoid damage |
| No enchantments | 15 | 0 |
| Respiration I | 30 | 50% |
| Respiration II | 45 | 66.7% |
| Respiration III | 60 | 75% |
In short, the Respiration enchant is very useful in many situations. It gives players more time in the water, which is important for:
- Explore shipwrecks
- Collect sea lamps, corals or sponges
- Mining blocks underwater
- Build an underwater base
- Escape from hostile underwater monsters
It also helps players avoid sudden drowning and gives them more time to return to the water.
