PC gaming giant Valve recently released a statement on the pricing strategy for its newly announced console, Steam Machine. According to Valve, this device will be a “bargain” and has an “extremely competitive” price compared to equivalent DIY PC configurations in terms of performance.

However, the company also confirmed an important point: it will “not subsidize” the hardware Steam Machine to reduce retail prices, a common business practice of other platform publishers.

+ “Competitive” Pricing Strategy: Competing Directly with Self-Assembled PCs

Valve software engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais revealed this detail in a podcast interview Skill Up’s Friends Per Second. Although internal pricing at Valve is currently not finalized due to many fluctuating market factors, the pricing target has been clearly defined.

Griffais said:

“I think if you build a PC yourself from components and get the same basic level of performance, that’s the general price range we’re aiming for. Ideally, we’ll be quite competitive with that price point and offer a really good deal.”

+ Valve Resolutely Says “No” To Hardware Subsidies

When asked if Valve would be willing to compensate for production cost losses (subsidy) for Steam Machine to lower retail prices or not, Griffais denied this was part of the company’s plan.

This approach is entirely consistent with Valve’s previous history of hardware launches:

  • Consistent with the PC Market: Pricing will be “more in line with what you can expect from the current PC market.”
  • Valve Index precedent: Previous hardware products, like the Valve Index virtual reality headset that launched at $999, have never received significant discounts, even when competitors cut prices.
  • Steam Deck: While Steam Deck is priced competitively (once described by President Gabe Newell as “painful”), the company is not expected to lose money on the business.

+ Exclusive Advantages: Optimal Design and Extremely Low Noise

Although not subsidized, Valve believes that Steam Machine is still a “bargain” thanks to features that users can hardly build themselves if assembling a PC:

  • Small Form Factor (Compact size): Compact design, optimized to fit the living room environment.
  • Noise Level: Noise levels are almost non-existent. “I think the noise level we achieved, or rather the lack of noise, is really impressive,” said Griffais.

+ Overview Information About Steam Machine

Steam Machine is one of three new hardware devices announced by Valve, alongside the VR headset Steam Frame and controller Steam Controller new.

  • Operating system: The device will run Linux-based SteamOS, similar to the operating system seen on the Steam Deck.
  • Performance: The Steam Machine is expected to be six times more powerful than the Steam Deck handheld.
  • Launch time: Valve hasn’t given an official release timeframe, but the device is expected to launch in 2026.
