Complete guide to exploring Ancient City in Minecraft 1.19
Ancient City Minecraft is a fun place to explore. The article will provide details for you How to find Ancient City in Minecraft.
Ancient City, ancient cities, are the most difficult structures to explore in Minecraft. Although it is mostly covered in darkness, normal mobs will not appear there, except for the Warden. However, they are too dangerous, with powerful attacks that can easily kill players even when equipped with full Netherite armor.
If you are also having difficulty exploring this structure, please refer to the complete guide to exploring Ancient City in Minecraft 1.19 below.
How to find Ancient City
To prepare for an expedition to an Ancient City, gamers need to do the following.
Find a city
If you are using the Ancient City seed, gamers just need to dig on the coordinates of the ancient city. However, if you are playing in your own world, a different approach is needed.
First, dig underground until you reach the Deepslate layer, close to Bedrock. Once you get somewhere between Y = -44 and Y = -52, start mining. This gives the highest chance of finding an ancient city
The player should approach the Ancient City from the same level or from below, because if exploited from above, the character risks falling straight into it. Even if the player survives fall damage, the player is still at risk of being killed by the Warden. Ancient City is also more likely to spawn under new mountain biomes.
Minecraft ancient city appears under which biome?
Ancient Cities or Deep Dark Biomes appear frequently below low erosion biomes. These are basically hilly areas, such as Jagged Peak and Cherry Grove.
If you find a tall mountain, stretching across the surrounding area, try mining underneath it!
Remember that you will never find Deep Dark or an ancient Minecraft city under the ocean, lake or swamp.
Find the ancient city using cheat code
If you are playing Minecraft with cheats, you can use the /locate command to find the ancient city. Try entering the following command to find the Minecraft ancient city.
/locate structure minecraft:ancient_city
This action will return the coordinates of an ancient city, allowing you to easily find a direct route location. If you don’t want to go there, you can also teleport with a separate code. This method is too easy to follow, isn’t it?
When starting to see regular Sculk Blocks, gamers can also find Sculk Catalysts, Shriekers and Sensors. However, be careful if near those blocks because players can summon Warden. If you step on a Shriekers Redstone Block or activate a nearby Sculk Sensor, the Warden will be warned once. The scary and very powerful monster will appear nearby if the gamer reaches three warning levels.
It’s important to note that not every Deep Dark biome has an Ancient City. If you find a fairly small Deep Dark biome, it is likely that you will not find a city there and will have to move to another cave. It’s also very dark, so always have some torches and lights ready to look around the area.
Locating Ancient areas in Minecraft can yield valuable rewards. Many of the blocks featured in it are useful for decorating the base, such as variations of the Deepslate block.
Prepare items
To ensure safety when exploring Ancient City, gamers need to prepare the following tools:
- The best possible armor, weapons and tools.
- A good source of foods like cooked pork stew or yellow carrots.
- Multiple piles of wool or rugs and a pair of shears. These blocks can be used to block vibrations.
- Silk Touch pickaxe to collect Sculk blocks and destroy Sculk Shriekers.
- Night vision medicine.
- Infinity Bow/Snowball/Egg to distract the guards.
Some optional items:
- A full set of Netherite armor, ideally with Protection IV.
- Some golden apples or yellow apples are enchanted for quick recovery.
- Some Ender Pearls to escape.
- Bucket of milk to remove the Darkness effect.

- Move stealthily at all times
The most important thing when exploring the Ancient City is to move stealthily at all times, unless the player is in corridors with gray wool paths. Press two directional keys at the same time for faster stealth speed.
Guide to exploring Ancient City
Destroy the Sculk Shrieker
This is the most important thing to do when exploring an ancient city. Players need to destroy or place wool around Sculk Shriekers that are about to scream, to prevent them from summoning Warden. However, breaking them will activate nearby Sculk Sensors, which can alert other nearby Sculk Shriekers.
To prevent alarm sounds, wrap wool around the Sculk Shrieker before breaking. Since that method is quite tedious, be prepared to run away when necessary. Ideally, players should have a safe exit leading away from the Ancient City, towards the surface, to stay safe.
If the Warden is digging back into the ground, quickly rush in and destroy all the Sculk Sensors and Sculk Shriekers. No Wardens can appear during this period.
Loot chests in Ancient City
Ancient City’s chest can be surrounded by several Sculk Sensors and Sculk Shriekers. If this is the case, prepare an escape route, use the pickaxe to break all the Sculk blocks and run out as quickly as possible.
First, always destroy the Sculk Shrieker closest to the emergency exit. People can use the fleece-covered corridors as a safe route to sprint away from the screaming Sculk Shriekers without the risk of activating any nearby Sculk Sensors.
If there is a group of several Sculk Shriekers close together, everyone can quickly place high-level light sources around their 11×11 spacing. This prevents the Warden from spawning despite the noise.
However, it is important to check if there are any other nearby noises that are not covered by a light source. If the player cannot disable any screams, the Warden will definitely spawn at this point.
Avoid the Warden
When the Warden appears, the player will have 7 seconds to run as far as possible. However, this risks causing more Shriekers and spawning even more Wardens. This is why players need to always have an escape route ready.
If you can’t escape because of its scent, try shooting bows and arrows, throwing eggs or snowballs around to distract it. However, to distract the Warden from attacking, there are 3 rules players need to follow:
- Do not shoot the Warden by accident.
- Make sure there is a reasonable distance between the Warden and the block where the bow, egg or snowball lands (greater than 5 blocks).
- Don’t fire multiple bullets in a row, instead, wait 5 seconds or more before taking the next shot.
In case of being chased by Warden, there are 2 ways to escape this dangerous situation:
Make a jump tower upward by placing blocks below his feet, until he is higher than the Warden. The player needs to be much taller as the warden can melee attack up to 5 blocks above and 30 blocks with a ranged sonic burst attack, usable 10 seconds after starting to chase the character . Once you’ve built a few blocks, continue this process (if possible) until you reach the ceiling of the cave,
Another method of escaping from a Warden is to sprint somewhere it cannot follow, such as across a gap 2 blocks high (Wardens are only as tall as Endermen) and then try to go further out of there. Without creating a hole about 30 blocks away beforehand, the Warden can still attack and kill everyone with its sonic burst attack.
