What is ChatGPT Work?
ChatGPT Work is an integrated agent in ChatGPT, launched by OpenAI on July 9, 2026 and operates based on GPT-5.6 and OpenAI’s Codex technology. With just a single command, it can operate on your applications & files, handle complex projects for hours, and return complete results — such as Excel models, Word documents, presentations, even a website.
The most prominent feature of ChatGPT Work is the Unified Plugins Directory, which brings together third-party integrations in a single location, including: Google Drive, SharePoint, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, Outlook, Salesforce, Adobe, Zoom, LinkedIn, GitHub, Canva, Dropbox and many more. You can activate a data source by using the “@” character (like when mentioning someone’s name), or let the agent decide for itself which source is needed for the job. A security layer called “Auto-Review” uses advanced models to check for risky actions before executing them; OpenAI said the system successfully blocked 100% of data exfiltration attempts during simulated attack testing.
What is Claude Cowork?
Claude is a desktop “AI colleague” developed by Anthropic. This is a tab in the Claude application (next to the Chat and Code tabs), capable of reading files, performing scheduled tasks and returning the finished result to you while you are busy doing other things. This tool was officially released to the public on April 9, 2026, after a public testing period on macOS (January) and Windows (February). It is now also available on web platforms as well as mobile devices.
While ChatGPT Work connects to cloud applications, Cowork is designed to recognize and work directly with the local file system: you just need to point it to a folder on your computer, Claude Cowork will process the files there directly. This can be considered the knowledge work version of Claude Code — possessing the capabilities of an AI agent but aimed at users who are not specialized in programming.
