Writing about the song Santa Monica Dream, in the game Life Is Strange.
1. Open the lesson
Hi everyone, I’m almost 24 years old and sitting in the office with a boring 10-hour job, I decided to skip work and type this article to share with everyone a folk song and a good game. And also to celebrate with everyone when Thanh Luke’s new album was just released. Those are Santa Monica Dream and the game Life Is Strange
2. Super summary of the game plot:
You are Max, an 18 year old girl who has just returned to town after many years away. You’re going to the bathroom when suddenly, a girl with blue hair appears, another guy holds a gun to her head. That girl was shot, causing you to awaken the super power to rewind time??, saving her life.
Max saves Chloe with super powers
And suddenly, it turns out she’s Chloe, her childhood best friend, and she’s nice. After 7749 argued about why you left the city, lost contact, life, etc., Chloe took you back to her room to rest. And while “rediscovering” the room where you both grew up, you find a radio, turn it on and…
3. Santa Monica Dream is playing.
Very naturally, you continue to explore every corner of the wall and drawer. You find a picture the two of you once drew together, a few photos of your family, a band poster on the wall, a bad tattoo… You walk around, interact with objects, talk to Chloe, and you will immediately understand what the game is trying to tell. Everything shows how Chloe’s life changed when Max left: dying her hair blue, smoking weed, knowing bad people and liking women more (basically almost like the female lead in Blue Is The Warmest Color)…
All these interactions, these experiences happen with music and lyrics:
“Goodbye to my Santa Monica dream Fifteen kids in the backyard drinking wine You tell me stories of the sea And the ones you left behind.”
“Goodbye dear Santa Monica, 15-year-olds drinking in the backyard You told me the story of the sea And the people/memories/dreams you left behind”
…
The first four verses tell the story of children, spending a happy childhood together in Santa Monica, until they leave and leave behind what belongs to the past. And through that we also understand the story of Chloe and Max. They were also close children, until Max left, leaving Chloe alone to face the pain (if you’ve played the game, you’ll know). Now when fate once again draws them together, the two have become very different

Absolute Show Don’t Tell
Chloe and Max as children
Many times when writing this article, I often think that I just need to send a link to the music, briefly introduce this song, it’s very good, in this game it’s also very good for everyone to listen to. But I really like this song and if I write it lightly, it’s no different than littering the group, so I’ll try to summarize as briefly as possible what I think people need to know to enjoy the work.
Because if you just listen but don’t know or haven’t played the game, then this song is just a good, gentle song, and will join countless songs that we may never listen to again. I have also added a YouTube video about the summary game segment above, you can watch it to understand more.
4. Only when we have suffered will we know happiness (conclusion)
I wrote this song when I was madly in love with someone in Santa MonicaJulia Stone said when interviewed.
Angus on the left, Julia on the right
Angus and Julia Stone are two artist brothers who wrote this song during their time in California. They commented that this song, and its album Down The Way, are a daydream, about a desired life that never happened or did not happen. And they think it will evoke the sympathy of many people.
“I’m somewhere, you’re somewhere,” the Stones sing in the chorus, before adding, “I could go there, but I don’t.”
“I’m somewhere, you’re somewhere,” the Stones sing in the chorus, and the next verse is “I could come, but I don’t.”
It’s clear that the characters in the song have separated, they regret it, about another, more beautiful life, just like how guilty Max felt about leaving Chloe and not contacting her for a long time. And when I learned about this work, I also had many regrets and dreams like the characters.
