Why is Epic willing to give away so many free games?
The game of game stores is still becoming very fierce until now, Steam’s monopoly has long been considered as solid as rock for gamers.
Users have also gradually become accustomed to installing Steam on their computers to run games, and take it for granted. Besides Steam, we also have many other game stores such as Uplay, Origin, GOG,… but almost all of them have no chance to compete with Steam.
Even the company that owns Origin (EA) and Uplay (Ubisoft) had to make concessions to bring many of their games to Steam with the aim of reaching more buyers, that alone is enough to understand that they themselves have admit defeat in this game.
But since 2018, a game Store has emerged and threatened Steam’s dominance: Epic, a game company that was previously better known thanks to Unreal Engine and the game Fortnite.
And to threaten Steam, they have many clever policies, one of which is giving away free games.
Among them there are so many great and terrible games that you won’t believe that one day they will be free. For example, Subnautica, ARK Survival Evolved, Just cause 4, Hitman,… and most especially Grand Theft Auto V.
So why is Epic Games willing to play so big? Are they willing to give away a lot of Max games for free that users can’t expect?
#1. Attract users to Epic
Epic is a behind-the-scenes store platform, so of course they have to have some kind of breakthrough to stand out from older platforms that are already familiar to users like Steam, but if you want to stand out, you have to play big and work. Free distribution of many top games is one of them.
I’m sure you wouldn’t be interested in installing Epic Store on your device if it wasn’t to receive weekly games, right? (but playing or not is another matter).
Because most of you have already assumed that if you want to play a game, you will install Steam first (unless you play crack or pirated goods), so why would anyone want to download another store to fill it? machine right?
Therefore, they use this method to encourage many people to download the store to their devices, and who knows, when you use it too much, you will gradually be attracted and decide to buy games there?
#2. Epic has made too much money from Fortnite
Since its launch in 2017 during the Battle Royale craze, Fortnite has become one of the most played games (ranked 9th according to superdata rankings).
And with a huge number of players (about 350 million registered accounts – according to statista), Epic has also earned a lot of money from this game, with sales of $ 1.8 billion in 2019. Yes, That’s just in 2019, guys.
With such huge sales from just the game Fortnite, the fact that Epic is willing to give away many great games for free to attract users to its side is not too difficult to understand.
#3. Advertisement for an upcoming game
There will be many people willing to receive any given game for free, just to make their library look nice but not necessarily play it.
And after receiving the game, at least they will know what the game is, and soon if they release a sequel or DLC, there will probably be more potential customers ready to buy, right?
Then users will wonder, “Ah, this game must be very successful, so there is a sequel, I have to play it.” So you can attract more buyers.
Let’s take a more specific example: Watch dogs 2, a game released for free on Epic in September 2020, only a month later was the game’s sequel Watch Dogs:Legion released.
So, if someone has received and played Watch Dogs 2, when they see the next part released they will most likely consider buying the next part, but if they don’t receive it for free, it is unlikely they will pay attention to the series. this game.

#4. Conclusion
Of course, the reasons above are not all for Epic to be willing to distribute many games for free. But whatever the reason, this is beneficial for us gamers, isn’t it 🙂
If you are a game enthusiast, try to get as many games as possible because you don’t know when Epic will stop giving away games for free (>‿♥)
