Notepad has evolved from a simple word processor used only for copying and pasting text between other editors, into a truly useful application. Currently, Microsoft is integrating Copilot AI into the application, allowing you to manipulate or even create text through artificial intelligence (AI) right in Notepad.

How to enable AI in Notepad

By default, the latest version of Windows turns on all AI features, including in Notepad. You can check if Notepad has AI enabled right in the settings:

• Step 1. Open Notepad.
• Step 2. Click the gear icon (Settings) in the upper right corner.
• Step 3. Scroll down and make sure “Copilot” is enabled.

How to use AI features on Notepad

Use Rewrite to edit notes

Features Rewrite – Rewrite allows you to take raw text notes and edit them without having to retype anything. The AI ​​may occasionally make some creative changes, but it will try to match the perceived or suggested tone.

1. Type or paste your note into Notepad, then highlight the text you want to improve.
2. Press Ctrl+D or right click on the selected text > select Rewrite from the menu. This option is also available via button Rewrite on the toolbar Copilot above.
3. A second dialog box will appear with options to make your text longer or shorter. If you want to change the tone or format of your text, select what you need to get suggestions.
4. Wait for Copilot to process the information, then the app will display three different rewritten versions in a pop-up. Click Replace on the version you like best to replace it in your document.

Summarize long notes using Summarize

If you have multi-page notes from a lecture, meeting, or article and only need the important content, use the Summarize feature. As the name suggests, this feature summarizes everything into its core points (usually in the form of a bulleted list).

1. Select the text you want to summarize.
2. Press Ctrl + Mright click and select Summarizeor click options on the toolbar Copilot.
3. Choose the length of your summary based on the details you want to retain.
4. Review the summary that appears. If it looks good, click Insert Below to add it to your document right below the original text, or simply copy it to use elsewhere.

Note, you can’t undo the work, so if the AI ​​fails to summarize the first time, you’ll need to add context or remove potentially confusing parts to get the results you want.

Use Write to create new content

The Rewrite feature can help you overcome idea jams or provide initial structure to improve your research and note-taking.

Click where you want the new text to appear in the document. If you want the AI ​​to refer to any content, highlight them first.

1. Press Ctrl + Q or right click and select Write from the menu (or Microsoft Copilot bar).
2. Describe what you want in simple language, such as “write a friendly email reminder about a team meeting” or “create a bulleted list of travel essentials.”
3. Click Sendand the AI ​​in Notepad will create the content. If you like, please click Keep Text to add it to your document. If not, you can request another version or just remove it.
