Privacy settings on iPhone you should turn on immediately
Apple gives users great control over personal privacy and security. Here it is Privacy settings you should turn on right away on your iPhone.
Stop sharing iPhone analytics data
Like most hardware companies, Apple collects diagnostic and usage data from your phone. This data may include crash reports, performance of certain features, and your device usage patterns. The purpose of this is to help Apple improve the iOS operating system over time. However, if you don’t want your phone to silently send this information, you can easily turn this feature off.
Come in Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements. Here, you will see some on/off options. Please turn off the item Share iPhone Analytics to prevent the device from sending data to Apple.
By the way, you may also want to disable the item Improve Siri & Dictation to prevent Apple from saving text records from your voice interactions. Finally, turn off the item Share iCloud Analytics to keep all your iCloud activities more private. These changes will not affect the performance of your iPhone, so implementing them is not harmful at all.
Ad tracking
Apple shows you personalized ads on the App Store, Apple News, and Stocks based on your activities. Although this data is not shared with third parties, you probably don’t want to be tracked by Apple at all. To turn off this feature:
- Open Settings.
- Scroll down and touch Privacy & Security.
- Touch Apple Advertising at the bottom of the screen.
- Flip the item switch Personalized Ads to off state.
Location service
Many apps request access to your location, but not all apps need it to work. Continuous location tracking can drain your battery and create a detailed record of your daily movements. You should regularly check which apps can access your location and how often. Pay special attention to the Significant Locations feature – which keeps a detailed log of the places you frequent and is an important Apple privacy setting on the iPhone.
- Enter Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Review the list of applications. For any app that doesn’t need to know your location, select Never. For other apps, select While Using the App instead of Always.
- Turn off the feature Precise Location for apps that don’t need to know your exact coordinates, such as weather apps.
- To turn off Significant Locations, scroll to the bottom of the section Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations and flip the switch to turn off this feature.
Protect your Mail activity
Perhaps you often open emails without thinking twice. However, what you may not know is that many of those emails contain tracking pixels. Silently notify the sender when and where you opened the email. This is a common trick among both marketers and spammers.
Luckily, Apple offers a privacy feature that helps block these tracking pixels, called Mail Privacy Protection. When enabled, this feature hides your IP address and prevents senders from knowing whether (or when) you opened their emails. The way this feature works is to remotely download email content through Apple’s servers instead of downloading directly on your device.
To enable this feature, go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Privacy Protection and turn the switch to On mode at item Mail Privacy Protection.
Note that this feature will not prevent tracking if you click on a link within an email,
Hide notification previews
Even when your iPhone is locked, it may still display more information than you expect. By default, the device will display messages, emails and other notifications right on the lock screen. In addition, the screen will light up every time there is a new notification, which can attract the attention of people around.
To keep that information private, enter Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and choose When Unlocked or Never. This way, notification content will only appear when you’re actually holding the phone in your hand. If you don’t want this setting to apply to all apps, you can also adjust notification settings individually for specific apps like WhatsApp or Messages.
Turn on automatic updates
Apple regularly releases updates that fix security holes, fix bugs, and sometimes add new privacy features without much fanfare. This also applies to apps—many updates include silent improvements that help protect your data. If you don’t turn on automatic updates, you could miss out on important security and privacy improvements for days or even weeks.
To enable this feature, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Then, go back to the main settings screen, go to section Apps > App Store > App Updates and choose On. It only takes a minute to do, but you’ll have complete peace of mind that your iPhone is running the safest and most secure versions for every app you use.
