Specifically, the company said that the AI images were created for “placeholder” purposes and that their presence in the official version of the game was completely due to “accident”.

“During development, a number of 2D sprites were created in early testing, using experimental generative AI tools. These sprites helped us quickly explore the tone and atmosphere of the game during the early stages of production.

However, our intention from the beginning was to replace all of this content – once completed and reviewed by the art and development teams – with images that were consistent with our quality standards and creative direction.

After receiving feedback from the community, we determined that some of the above resources were accidentally included in the final release. This goes against our internal standards, and we accept full responsibility for this incident.”

The developer said the reason they did not publicly share the use of generative AI was because they thought these images would be adjusted before the game launched, but they were wrong.

To resolve the issue, Pearl Abyss is conducting a comprehensive audit of its contents Crimson Desertto identify AI-generated content and remove it from the game.
