How to track flights on iPhone without installing the App
Real-time flight tracking on iPhone via Messages and Spotlight without needing to install third-party apps.
During peak travel days such as Christmas and Tet, it is extremely important to accurately grasp the flight time of yourself or your loved ones.
Normally, users will immediately think of downloading specialized aviation tracking applications from third parties. However, if you are using an iPhone, the iOS operating system has a built-in powerful tool to help you do this quickly and completely free.
This feature works based on Apple’s smart data recognition capabilities, allowing it to turn flight codes into links containing full real-time itinerary information.
To update this feature, upgrade your device:
See flight details right in the Messages app
One of the simplest ways to check flight status is through the Messages app (iMessage). When a friend or relative sends you a flight code (for example, VN254 or VJ123), the iOS system will automatically recognize and underline that text, turning it into an interactive link.
To increase the accuracy of the device’s identification ability, it is best to include the airline name along with the flight code in the same message.
Users just need to long press on the underlined flight code to activate the preview feature.
Immediately, a visual map will appear, showing the actual location of the aircraft moving in the sky. Besides, you can select Flight Preview to access a detailed information panel including departure time, expected landing time, delays if any and even information about the baggage carousel at the arrival airport.
Look up quickly with Spotlight Search
If you do not receive a text message containing a flight code, you can still actively look it up through the Search tool (Spotlight) on both iPhone and iPad.
On the main screen, you just need to swipe down from the middle of the screen to open the search bar, then enter the flight code directly into the empty box.
The system will immediately return a flight information card with all the necessary data.
When you tap this information card, the interface expands to display in-depth details similar to the view in Messages.
You’ll get flight progress, estimated arrival time, and direct links to the airline’s website or the Apple Maps app for directions to the airport.
This is an extremely convenient way to quickly check whether the plane has taken off or not without having to open a web browser or download a junk app.
Seamless flight tracking on Mac computers
Apple’s ecosystem allows this convenient feature to work seamlessly on Mac computers.
Thanks to integrating the same data identifier as on iOS, macOS users can track flights right while working. You just need to press Command + Spacebar to open Spotlight, then enter the flight code.
The results displayed on the Mac will include a small window containing a live trajectory map and important timing parameters.
This helps you easily plan to pick up relatives at the airport without interrupting unfinished work on your computer. With these available utilities, tracking flight itineraries during the 2025 holiday season becomes simpler and smarter than ever.
