How to sync photos on iPhone to Windows faster and more conveniently than iCloud
iCloud Photos is a photo synchronization service that Apple prioritizes for iPhone users. But if you use a Windows computer, use Microsoft’s OneDrive instead of iCloud to back up and sync photos.
With OneDrive, you easily save photos to the cloud and sync them across all your devices—Windows computers, iPhones, and iPads. In addition, editing photos directly on Windows and syncing changes with iTunes or the Apple Devices application is also easy. Like Apple, Microsoft offers 5GB of free storage. If you need more, you’ll have to pay for a Microsoft 365 subscription.
Before syncing, take some time to review the photos on your iPhone and delete any files you no longer want. This will remove bad photos and free up space on your phone and in OneDrive.
How to sync photos on iPhone to Windows via OneDrive
To get started, you need to install OneDrive on your iPhone. Open the app and sign in with your Microsoft account. Touch the icon Gallery at the top. You may see a message that says Camera Backup – Photo Backup is turned off. If so, touch it Turn On. If not, tap your account profile icon and select On below the item Camera Backup is off.
Alternatively, you can also enter Settings > Camera Backup and then turn on Camera Backup. You’ll receive a notification from OneDrive requesting full access to your photo library. At the bottom, tap Allow Full Access.
During the backup process, a blue circle will appear around your account profile icon. Tap that circle to see how many files and space are used on OneDrive. When the process is complete, the status will indicate that the backup is complete.
On your Windows computer, make sure OneDrive is set up and syncing. In Windows, right-click the OneDrive icon in the system tray and select Settings. At the screen Sync and backupclick Manage backups > on Picturesthen click Save Changes.
To view synced photos, click the OneDrive icon in the system tray and select Open folder. Open the Pictures folder in the OneDrive folder tree and select Camera Roll. Your OneDrive photos are sorted by date, starting with the year and then the month. You can choose to view photos by specific year and month.
By default, OneDrive files in Windows are only stored in the cloud and downloaded to your computer when you open them. If you want to have all your photos on your computer so you can access them at any time, even offline, you need to open File Explorerright-click on the folder Camera Roll and choose Always keep on this device. All your photos will then be downloaded to your computer.
However, Apple’s “closed garden” approach creates a major limitation: you won’t be able to sync changes to photos across devices if you delete, edit, or rename them.
