Artificial intelligence chatbots are becoming a part of the daily lives of many families. Children use them to study, come up with ideas for creative projects and of course – sometimes just for fun. As a parent, it’s important to ask yourself: Is the information ChatGPT provides safe? And how can you ensure your child has the most positive experience on this platform?
Millions of teenagers and children are curious about these technologies, and they can really be useful when used properly. But like any new technology, AI chatbots come with questions about safety, privacy, and age appropriateness. And the birth of Parental Controls helps parents feel more secure when letting their children use AI ChatGPT.
What are Parental Controls on ChatGPT?
Essentially, ChatGPT’s parental controls are tools that allow parents to link their accounts to their children’s accounts and manage how the app works. Parents can set limits, turn off certain features, and make the overall experience more age-appropriate with these controls.
So instead of leaving everything open, parents can decide what’s right for their family and customize settings directly from their own account. Once parent and child accounts are linked, ChatGPT automatically enables protections, such as reducing graphic or sensitive content, viral challenges, and blocking adult, romantic, or violent role-playing games.
These settings are applied by default to teens. Parents can choose to turn them off, teens do not have the right to change them on their own. In addition to the default protections, parents also have a control page with the following options:
- Set quiet hours (specific times cannot use ChatGPT)
- Turn off voice mode
- Turn off memory, so that ChatGPT does not save previous conversations
- Disable image generation tool
- Do not participate in model training (so that conversations will not be used to improve ChatGPT)
Along with this, OpenAI has also added notifications for serious situations (like signs of self-harm), along with a dedicated resource page for parents, including tips, guides and expert advice to help every family use ChatGPT safely.
