How to display coordinates on Minecraft Java and Bedrock
In Minecraft, coordinates act as a reference point for players to easily locate and find their way back to places they have been to. In this article, let’s find out how to display coordinates on screen in Minecraft Java and Bedrock versionswhich helps players with reading comprehension to easily navigate the vast world of the game.
What are coordinates in Minecraft?
Coordinates tell the player where he is in the Minecraft world relative to the origin point 0, 0, 0. Sometimes the point 0, 0, 0 coincides with the spawn location, but not always due to Minecraft’s random terrain generation process. Coordinates are displayed as X, Y, Z.
- X indicates how far east (positive value) or west (negative value) the player is from the origin (longitude).
- Y indicates how high or low the player is on the map (from -64 to 255, where 64 is sea level).
- Z indicates how far south (positive value) or north (negative value) the player is from the origin (latitude).
In this example, the coordinates show that the player is 141 blocks east and 239 blocks south of point 0, 0, 0.
The importance of the Y coordinate
The Y coordinate shows how high up the player is in the game, from -64 to 255. This is especially important when mining ore, as each type of ore only appears within a certain altitude range. Whether you care about the X and Z coordinates or not, when mining ore, gamers must pay attention to the Y coordinates.
How to display coordinates in Minecraft versions
Minecraft Java Edition
Unlike the Bedrock version, Minecraft Java does not have an option to enable/disable coordinates in the settings. Instead, the player will need to press a key F3 on your computer. This will create a large wall of text that covers the screen and people can find the coordinates in it. If you are using the machine Macpress the key combination Fn + F3 or Alt + Fn + F3 instead of just pressing F3.
Although not practical, this is the only way to view coordinates in Java Edition without using mods. Part “XYZ“, boxed in red, describes the exact coordinates of where the character is in Minecraft at that moment.
However, the section immediately below it, is titled “Block“, rounds the coordinates to the nearest whole number in case the player wants to tell someone an easier number or records the coordinates for later use.
