The journey takes place in a submerged landscape, where more and more bizarre marine life appears as you move deeper into the ocean.

People in the world of UMIGARI are no longer normal. Their behavior becomes distorted, bizarre and scary. NPC requests go far beyond familiar standards, making the atmosphere in the game heavy and oppressive. Compared to UMIGARI, sea-inspired games like DREDGE or Subnautica become much more “relaxing”.

What is the curse?

The curse in UMIGARI is that fish turn into people and people turn into fish. Fish do not understand the concept of humans, but when they wake up in their new form, they carry extreme hunger and deep resentment towards humans, who have hunted them for many years.

Fishing in the game is mainly aimed at earning money to upgrade boats, of which the most important upgrade is speed. However, the addictive gameplay mechanics along with the fact that fish become rarer and more valuable the further you progress, makes the journey gradually turn towards greed and resource exploitation.

Although the fish creatures that turn into humans seem crazy and irrational, their behavior clearly reflects the dark side of humanity. When witnessing the cries of his fellow creatures, the almighty whale decided to curse the land, forcing fish and people to change places.

What is the Umigari monster?

The main monster in UMIGARI is Umiga, a giant sea spirit with a female formlurking offshore. Umiga especially hates the sound of bells, so you must find and place bells on buoys to scare her away, thereby opening the way to new areas.

Umiga’s appearance initially resembles a giant woman’s head, but as she approaches the boat, her face will deform into a large mouth. Inside are arms reaching out to pull the boat to the bottom of the sea.

In addition, the game also features Umibōzu, a giant sea monster capable of capsizing boats. This entity appears in the second half of the game and attacks the player in the area inside the Suspicious Dome. Other monsters in UMIGARI also bear strong traces of Japanese folklore, including Nure-onna and Ningyo.

The curse will be lifted if you admit to the whale that humans, including yourself, are evil.. The ending shows the ocean filled with corpses – humanity wiped out in the blink of an eye. This ending implies that even if another species replaces humans, they can still fall into greed, violence, and dark desires. If humans are truly the embodiment of evil, then change is impossible, and eliminating them from Earth is considered the safest solution. This is a pessimistic conclusion, deeply skeptical.
