Cursed Digicam game ending explained
After understanding the plot of the game Cursed Digicam, let’s analyze the ending of this heartbreaking and haunting story!
Cursed Digicam game ending explained
Although the story is somewhat confusing, we can conclude that the girl in the photo at the park is actually Manami Koudan, because these photos can be uploaded to the Spirit Liberation Center. Only when uploading Mitsuka’s image did an error appear, signaling that she had been dead for more than 13 days.
The missing person poster at the beginning and end of the game is Manami, not Mitsuka. The girl’s name was removed and we only see an image of a little girl at the beginning of the game, leading gamers to believe that it is Mitsuka because that is the only information the main character provides at that time.
He sets out to rescue Manami, forgetting what his real daughter looks like. But what does this mean? As the story ends rather abruptly after Mitsuka’s call, we question the logic of this final event. Especially when Mitsuka appears from the bathtub wearing bloody pajamas. It appears that both children were wearing the same pajamas, but only one was killed.
What happened to Mitsuka?
Based on the events, the story of Cursed Digicam can be interpreted as follows: Mitsuka died at home, and the main character tried to replace her by kidnapping Manami. Mitsuka’s image could not be taken and the soul could not be released because she died more than 13 days ago. Therefore, the camera has no effect.
What we believe happened is: Mitsuka went to the park herself, playing with an imaginary friend in the form of a stuffed mouse mascot. The girl was playing on the slide and fell, hitting her head on the ground. Mitsuka then tried to call his father to take him home, saying his head hurt but he didn’t pay attention because he was busy with work. That night, Mitsuka died from a brain injury.
What happened to Manami?
In his grief, the father put on the head of Mitsuka’s favorite character, dressed in the clothes he usually wears to work, and lured Manami to his house. Although we can assume that he was trying to replace his daughter, events became more shocking when she was killed.
Based on the photos, Manami was kidnapped at the park and died at the main character’s house, likely by drowning. The cursed camera haunts the father, reminding him of his horrifying actions. It is clear that he is not only tormented by the loss of his daughter but also by the guilt of taking another innocent life.
The reason for killing Manami is unknown, but based on the opening, we can understand that he tried to replace Mitsuka with Manami. But the guilt never goes away. He couldn’t stand Manami walking around the house in Mitsuka’s pajamas, in the bedroom with her dead daughter’s name on the door. Having kidnapped Manami, he felt trapped, so the only option (in his miserable mind) was to drown her, dismember her body, and throw it in a trash bag.
Who called the police?
Mitsuka is seen making a phone call, which cannot be true since she died before Manami. What is more likely to happen is that the father surrendered to his guilt, confessed to the crime and jumped off the building, ending his life.
Why did the girl jump from the balcony?
However, the most mysterious part of Cursed Digicam is the little girl who follows the main character after jumping off the balcony. While the mouse mascot picks up the cursed camera (implying that the spirits are still alive), it’s strange why the little girl in purple pajamas follows him.
Maybe it was Mitsuka, following her father to the afterlife because she was the last ghost he saw. His father ending his life was the release Mitsuka needed to die peacefully, after bringing justice to Manami and making her father confess to his crimes.
Another hypothesis: Supernatural elements
There’s a theory offered by Reddit user Sea_Kangaroo_9826 that interprets the story quite differently – an evil entity manipulated the father into taking his life at the end of the game. It’s possible that he didn’t kill Manami, but that the entity tricked the father into believing so.
However, what we know is that the main character went to rescue Manami because he believed she was his daughter. The opening sequence states that he found the missing person’s poster before getting the camera.
There is a lot of evidence to support this theory, which suggests that the camera could be possessed by an Obake (Yokai). Obake (also known as Bakemono) is a spirit that can change shape. Its true form is often that of an animal – reminiscent of the mouse mascot.
After the camera shows Manami in the park at the beginning of the game, we continue to see her again, but this time in a more distorted form. There is an entity that stands out more than the mouse shape. This is a humanoid spirit with skin that is cracked as if burned. It transformed into other forms, manipulating Manami’s spirit until it merged with the mouse mascot, implying that they were one.
At the end of the game, after the main character commits suicide, the mouse mascot takes up the camera. There are two explanations for this: it is part of a vengeful entity that continues to live inside the camera, transforming to manipulate its next victim; Or it is an expression of the father’s guilt.
What’s absurd about this conclusion is that if the mouse mascot is really the father, then we can’t take pictures (because he’s not a ghost). The park mouse mascot and the house mouse mascot appear as two separate entities. If it’s not Obake, then it’s the soul of his father who took shape, haunting the outside of the apartment where he died.
