IBM has developed a method to display characters that cannot be typed with the keyboard on the screen: while holding down the Alt key, the user enters the code defined for that character through the numeric keypad. The system interprets this action and places the corresponding character at the cursor position as the BIOS.
These codes became so popular that Microsoft, despite developing a new set of codes, decided to keep them. The new code set was named ANSI (later changed to Windows code), and the old code set was called the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) code table. The three-digit code represents the OEM code. Codes preceded by a zero represent the new ANSI code.
Over the past two decades, Unicode has been adopted by many systems. After Windows adopted Unicode, entering all Unicode characters using the same method was desired and achieved by some applications, but was not universally available on all systems. Compatibility issues with legacy ANSI codes prevent the import of all Unicode characters.
Why use the Alt key combination on Windows
Standard, full-size keyboards typically have 104 keys and provide all the necessary characters for English and Vietnamese. This task is tedious and time-consuming, which is why the Windows Alt key combination can be useful, especially for multilingual users.
To use the Windows Alt key combination, simply press and hold the Alt key while entering the special character code on the numeric keypad. If you don’t have a numeric keypad, you can use the virtual keyboard. As long as you have memorized the code for your favorite special character, you can insert it in less than a second by pressing the appropriate key.
