MuseScore is a software used to compose music on PC or Mac computers. Users can add layers of musical symbols on the staff to create a full mix and export to PDF, MIDI, mp3 or .wav files.

In this article, let’s learn the instructions and the most basic operations you need to know to create music with MuseScore for beginners.

Create new Score

Step 1: Press Ctrl + N on the keyboard or click button with a page image and a plus sign in the upper left corner to create a new Score.

Step 2: Add title, subtitle, author, etc. These sections are optional and can be edited later.

Step 3: Choose a template in many styles and with different built-in instruments and voices.

Users can also choose a blank template and add their own tools to the page.

Step 4: Select key the part that people will use and the tempo, an option to edit it later.

Step 5: Select time signature, number of beats,… in the work. This information can also be edited later.

Step 6: Click Finish.

Add musical notes

Step 1: Press the button N at the top left of the window or press the key N on the keyboard to turn it on Note Input Mode.

Step 2: Drag the mouse over the bars and add notes wherever you want. The player can also enter the letter of the note, i.e. the word A arrive G.

Step 3: Increase or decrease the pitch of the note by switching the keys up and down arrows.

Step 4: Move the note up or down one octave by holding Ctrl and switch keys up or down arrow.

Add extra dots

Delete musical notes

Add musical instruments

Step 1: Click Edit on the menu bar and select Instruments to access the instrument menu. People can also press I to open this menu.

Add rhythm

Step 2: Click Add on the menu bar. Scroll through Measures and choose Insert One Measure (just add one) or Insert Measures (add more). The rhythm section will be inserted to the left of the selected bar.

Add diacritics

Step 1: Select musical notes that people want to add accents to.

Step 2: Go to the top of the screen until you see the mark # and . Then, select the mark you want to use to add it to the note.

Add objects from the Palette

Step 1: Open Palettes from the sidebar by pressing the key F9.

Step 2: Open the desired category, Click on the icon and drag it comes anywhere on the track.

Add hyphen

Select the notes you want to connect together. Press Shift + + on the keyboard to link them together. If there is a similar note after the second selected note, this will also link them together.

Add voices and other sounds to your music

Step 1: Use numbers of different colors (blue, green, tan, and purple) to add different sounds to the track. This way, users can add notes of different lengths to the same measure without having to use multiple hyphens.

Step 2: Select a note and assign it to a voice to divide the measure into two parts.

Add lyrics

Step 1: Select the note you want to enter the first word into.

Step 2: Press Ctrl + L and it will allow words to be entered there.

Step 3: Press space or add hyphen to move to the next note. It will automatically advance to the next note when the user performs this operation.

Change the tempo

Step 1: Select musical notes and click Add on the menu bar. Scroll through Text and find Tempo Marking. A text box marked with tempo appears at the beginning of the bar.

People can also use tap shortcuts Alt + T for Macintosh users or Ctrl + Alt + T for Windows users. If you’re not satisfied with the beat notes, you can Drag the tempo marker from Palettes.

Step 1: Select a note rest or a note.

Step 2: Click Notes on the menu bar. Scroll through Tuplets and choose tuplet I want. People can also click Other to create more than nine notes in a tuplet.

Change intensity
