How to create Minecraft resource packs
Resource packs allow users to add editable files or add custom textures, models, animations, music, sounds, user interfaces, and languages, which change the way certain things in Minecraft work, look, or sound.
Things not to do
- Anything that violates Minecraft’s End User License Agreement (EULA).
- Release files that allow users to play a version of Minecraft without purchasing from Mojang.
- Release decompiled source code of Minecraft in any form.
A great way to start is to use Minecraft’s default resource pack as a foundation. It includes all original textures, models, and sounds, giving you a reliable base for editing without worrying about incorrect sizes or missing files.
To access:
- Open Minecraft > Options > Resource Packs > Open the packs folder.
- You can extract/copy default textures to use.
- Download a specific version of the default textures online to use.
For example: Alpha, Beta and other game versions.
Once you’ve prepared your textures and files, it’s time to put them together!
- Open the resource pack folder you want to customize.
- Replace textures, sounds and other files accordingly. Example directory: …/assets/minecraft/textures/
- Repeat this process until complete, which may include .ogg, .json and .png files.
- Then, compress the entire resource pack folder containing everything into a zip file.
- Continue dragging this compressed file into the game’s resourcepacks folder.
- Enable it in game and test it out!
